Morry's Camp is a year-round youth development organization that provides to each child a multi-year commitment anchored by a superb residential summer camp experience.
The children, for whom these experiences would not otherwise be available, benefit from a network of support and gain increased social skills, enhanced self-esteem, positive core values and a greater sense of personal responsibility.
On October 28, 1994, Morry went to the American Camping Association’s headquarters in Martinsville, Indiana. As Chairperson of the American Camping Foundation(ACF), a foundation that had raised over $1,000,000 to send disadvantaged children to summer camp, Morry was there to head the ACF’s annual board meeting. The meeting was charged with excitement because the foundation was nearing its fundraising goal and because the gift so needed by America’s children was about to be given.
Morry’s life was taken on his return flight home on October 31, 1994, before he could fulfill his dream, and the dream of so many youngsters. Inspired by that dream, and to ensure that his vision of summer camp for all children becomes a reality, Morry’s friends, colleagues, and family created Morry’s Camp.
Morry's Camp is located on the site of Camp Mogisca approximately 90 miles west of New York City. The camp is nestled in the hills overlooking the upper Delaware River. The great natural beauty surrounding the 900 acres which make up Camp Mogisca is highlighted by streams, woodlands, marshlands and a small lake. The camp is just north of Port Jervis, NY and West of Monticello, NY in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains.
Morry’s Camp campers are kids who need a chance. They are selected because they want to try even though the odds may not be in their favor. They are bright, capable, willing, fun kids who are looking to take risks, face challenges and grow through an experience based on support, safety and success. Our campers population comes from agencies, schools and community based organizations within the New York Metropolitan Tri-State area. The campers attend camp through full scholarships. It is our gift to them. Their gift to us is their participation.
Morry's campers are selected through partnerships with community based organizations and agencies. Local youth centers, youth collaborations and church based groups are examples of such organizations. Their commitment to community through after-school programs, parental support and educational assistance, helps us in providing the consistency so necessary to the Morry's Camp program.
Morry's Camp campers are truly special kids who personify Morry Stein's dream. Just as the campers live out Morry's dream and return to camp summer after summer, so is Morry's Camp investing in the dreams of our campers and their future.
The 4x4 Program
Offers a traditional camp experience and monthly communications with the children who participate. This program has a strong literacy and educational component that is consistent in all aspects of the program.
The Post Grad Program
The Post Grad Program is an additional five year commitment that partners the Post Grad with Morry’s Camp through their high school graduation. There is a strong life skills development theme and an intensified year-round component.
The Year-Round Program
The Morry's Camp Campers keep close contact with camp throughout the year as they gather for monthly meetings with other campers in their area. During these gatherings fun activities lead the way to important discoveries and lessons about the importance of goals and the steps that are necessary to achieve them. The campers also receive monthly newsletters, which send consistent and supportive messages about what was accomplished at the meetings, along with specific things to look forward to as they count down the days until camp starts.
The Music Ascension Program (M.A.P.)
"We believe that children hold within themselves their own music". During the summer, our campers get together to write and sing about life and life at camp. This is a great chance for the children to find creative ways to express their ideas.
After writing and rehearsing their songs, Morry's Campers then performed their music in our music studio. These performances were all recorded live.
The albums produced this summer captured the most spirited of those performances. The great variety of song on those recordings is testament to the boundless imagination of children given the opportunity to speak, write and sing.
