- Function + Art Exhibition Schedule -
Function + Art, a nationally-recognized gallery specializing in Fine Craft, Studio Furniture and Sculptural Lighting, is pleased to announce its upcoming events and Exhibition Schedule.
On Now...
Following SOFA, Function + Art will continue its focus on Studio Furniture with an exhibition entitled "Forms & Surfaces: Studio Furniture - part 2", the second in a series of exhibitions intended to provide an introduction to the wide variety of forms, materials, techniques, and inspirations present in our field. Its mission is to educate the viewer to the wide range of possibilities that Studio Furniture presents; the practical, useful yet sculptural object that, properly cared for, may serve generations. Steel, bronze, various woods, concrete, and glass... geometric, organic, and whimsical... more than a dozen works by artisans Christopher Martin (IA), David Orth (IL), Jenna Goldberg (RI), Bishoff/Syron (MA), Mark Del Guidice (MA), Cameron P. Van Dyke (MI) and others will be featured. Several of the artists included will be simultaneously featured in "Cut it Out", and exhibition at the Fuller Craft Museum in Boston, MA. Other included artists have work traveling with the Furniture Society’s "CURV-ITURE 2004" exhibition; currently at the Hickory Museum of Art in North Carolina.
The truest expression of what is loosely termed "functional art", Studio Furniture refers to limited edition or one of a kind furnishings handcrafted in an artisan's studio. This installment in the series is concerned with unusual forms and surface treatments / materials, including polymer clay veneers, rubber, reclaimed steel and more.
The exhibition will open on Friday, November 12, 2004 with a free, public reception from 6-9 pm, and will continue through January 30, 2005. A series of gallery talks by participating artists is currently being scheduled; visit our website for confirmed dates.
FEBRUARY 2005
In keeping with Black History Month, Function + Art will spotlight furniture and sculpture by African American artist Richard Bennett of Detroit. Largely self-taught, Richard has also apprenticed with world-renowned sculptor Richard Hunt. Mr. Bennett’s works in wood, steel, & aluminum have been exhibited around the world; several are on permanent display at the CHARLES H. WRIGHT MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY in Detroit, including the museum’s iconic masks over each entry. Interestingly, Richard’s initial experiences with metal(s) came as a structural welder for industrial and aerospace companies... from that background, he has gained a mastery of nearly all means of metal joinery and welding, and a level of precision in his own work that surpasses most artists... he truly deserves the title "craftsman". Relentlessly exploring the relationship between angles and curves, his designs all seem lighter than the space they occupy -- a condition which has led critics to observe that his works "flirt with gravity".
Interiors Magazine (July, 93) stated "...His familiarity with stone, steel, and wood is reflected in the grace with which he mixes them, and in the ease with which he moves back and forth between art and furniture, blurring the lines at will...."
Mr. Bennett’s feature will open on Friday, February 11, with a free, public reception from 6-9pm.
Featured work -- "Dolphin" cocktail table. This sleek and fluid design is limited to an edition of 50, and may be ordered through the gallery at (312) 243-2780 or info@functionart.com . Left or right-oriented versions available. Retail price $ 6,500.
About the Gallery:
Function + Art had its origins in Pontiac, MI as Gallery: FunctionArt, which opened in December, 1993 and closed in October of 2001. In May of 2002, a smaller, more focused, and re-named Function + Art opened Chicago’s West Loop. Specializing in Studio Furniture, Ceramics, Metals, Glass and other fine craft media, Function + Art is highly regarded nationally for excellence in its programming. Recently (September 2004), a sister gallery, PRISM Contemporary Glass was opened to showcase studio glass on a year-round basis. Both galleries are open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10am -- 6pm. For more information, visit our website at www.functionart.com.

- Free Content For Your Website -
Dreams Alive Magazine recently launched it's "Free Content" concept which provides website owners with two wonderful ways to let our magazine help their website.
Article Reproduction
Any article within Dreams Alive Magazine that is written by an author who has agreed to be included in our Pre-Approved list, may be reproduced without further need of approval, as long as you follow some very simple guidelines, such as providing reciprocal links, holding onto bio info, etc.
This is such an easy way to add content to your website without having to dig endlessly for Home and Garden articles. We often find many articles we would love to use, but there is either no indication of re-print rights or even any contact info. We have gone so far beyond this by coming right out and saying..."This author has approved the use of their article and here is all the information you need.".
Even for those authors not on the Pre-Approved list, each article is provided with contact information that will allow you to easily contact the author. Their answer to you will almost always be yes. Some authors just prefer better tracking.
Article Feeds
Spice up your website and provide a professional and visually appealing impact on your visitors. Each time the page loads, a different selection is provided from our vast array of articles. All you need to do is place some JavaScript code on your page and we take care of everything else for you. Our current categories consist of:
- In Your Home
- In Your Garden
- Art & Humanities
Our dynamic code provides your site with a fresh appearance and helps it appear as though it is newly updated every time the person visits the page. Not only do the articles change with each page load, but we are always adding new articles to the list, ensuring that your visitors always find something new of interest.
Since our Free Content Article Feeds are similar to Links, we will also update your link listing with Dreams Alive Magazine as being a "Preferred Partner" and will add our "Top Preferred Site" icon to your link listing. In addition, we will move your link from its current location to the Number 1 position within the category. More traffic will flow into your site from our Link Area since your link will stand out much better than before.
Our articles are very well written and presented in a visually appealing manner. These article feeds are a clear message to your visitors that you appreciate family values and things of quality.
